There is a recurring theme when it comes to these films, audiences gather and hurry to see these headlining films of stories that have already been told in another time and or form. People love seeing the films’ interpretations of these stories they have already gotten to know and love so much.
It Ends With Us, from the bestselling novel to a screen adaptation, is one of the top charting films of 2024. Following the massive success of Colleen Hoover’s novel– which captivated readers with its raw portrayal of love, heartbreak, and survival– the story is transformed into a sequence of cinematography. The film stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, focussing on the complex relationship between characters Lily Bloom and troubled Ryle Kincaid. Although the film had some backlash online for the outfit options Blake wore on the film, and the decision to choose an actress who is older than the original character Lily, the true message was much louder.
Senior Lela Ramadani says, “The movie made me cry and the message was really powerful, this type of thing definitely should be talked about more.” The film is a depiction of domestic violence in the life of Lily Bloom, and its effect on women all over the world. The emotional film has reached women, and touched their hearts, highlighting real issues women and girls go through. This film has inspired a group of women who are too used to being afraid, showing them that they are strong enough to take control of their own lives, and stop the people that make them fearful in their lives.
Wicked the musical and long-awaited movie debut, for theater lovers, 2024 marks the monumental event– the arrival of Wicked on the big screen. This adaptation, which has been delayed for years, is finally set to enchant the audience. Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Arianna Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the film brings the magic of Oz to life with a whole new cinematic energy. Senior Lucia Nesbitt, says, “I thought the movie was great and it was very well casted.” The Broadway depiction already holds so much cultural significance, so the creation of this film is a site everyone was extremely excited to see.
Lastly, the movie Challengers is a drama that stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor. The atmosphere is set in a world of very competitive tennis and deep-dives into the personal and professional lives of three characters. One character, Tashi, is portrayed by Zendaya, someone she previously loved, and her current husband, who is a tennis star. Junior Lexi Catania, says, “I got to see this movie with my friends and I thought it was a good movie. Overall I liked it a lot and I want to watch it again at some point.” This movie explores different themes and dynamics such as relationships, competitiveness, and success off and on the court.
