Recently our school district made us switch to Classroom to Canvas. Due to this switch there has been a lot of controversy to see which one is better. We asked some students if they think Canvas is any better? And what do they prefer: Google Classroom over Canvas or Canvas over Google Classroom.
The district’s reason for switching to Canvas is to prepare students for upcoming college years. Many students feel that this reason isn’t valid enough to swap their entire work platform permanently. A lot of students have been voicing their opinion. It’s not putting it lightly to say that there are some students who strongly feel that Canvas is inferior to Google Classroom.
Junior Allison Lesser said “I prefer Google Classroom because it’s much simpler than Canvas. It is harder to check assignments and is harder to navigate than google classroom. I have more issues using Canvas than I ever did using Google Classroom.” This is just a few of the many issues that Canvas has been providing for students recently. Sophomore, Janina Kopleman said “I prefer Google Classroom because it is much simpler than Canvas. It is harder to navigate than Google Classroom. I have more issues using Canvas than I ever did with Google Classroom.”
People’s problems with Canvas continue to go further in depth. Freshman Ali Jaber said, “Canvas has many problems such as finding assignments and too many tabs for little things. Why can’t I click assignments to find what I need but I have to click modules. In addition to that, why is there a tab for grades and half the time it’s wrong. And the tab for files poses no real importance.” Some people’s main problems lie with Canvas’s questionable user interface. Sophomore Davi Oliveria said, “In Canvas I think there’s too much going on. There’s too many sections on the side tab that you can click on, and it’s extremely less organized. The format makes it hard for us to understand where certain assignments are put.¨
On the contrary, there are actually some students who prefer Canvas over Google Classroom. Some feel that Canvas can provide less issues compared to Classroom. Sophomore Emilio Roca said, “I prefer Canvas only because Google Classroom had many connection and update issues, it was too buggy, and Canvas simply doesn’t have the same issue Google Classroom did.” It’s interesting to see people’s point of view as to why Canvas can be better than its predecessor. A senior Mckenzie Moore says, “Canvas is very organized and up to date. I like how it lets you know what assignments are upcoming and you can mark them as complete.”
In conclusion, the switch from Google Classroom to Canvas remains controversial. It seems that people like Google Classroom better because it makes work easier, while some have embraced the recent change. Despite people’s feelings, we will most likely be stuck with Canvas for a while. Which platform do you prefer?
