Democratic State Senator Nellie Pou will represent New Jersey’s 9th congressional district after the recent death of Bill Pascrell.
Senator Nellie Pou was chosen to run for the position of congress in New Jersey’s 9th congressional district by the democratic party. She ran against Billy Prempeh, a representative of the republican party. She ended up getting 123,773 votes which is 50.6% of the votes. Billy Prempeh got 112,936 votes, which is 46.2% of the votes. After winning the majority of the votes, she is now representing New Jersey’s 9th district, which is the people of Bergen county, Passaic county, and Hudson county.
Senator Nellie Pou was representing New Jersey’s 35th Legislative district. She is the first woman, and hispanic woman to do so. She was the top democratic pick to replace Bill Pascrell after his death in August 2024. Representative Bill Pascrell unfortunately died three weeks after having a heart attack. Pou’s hefty political background made a good pick to win congress over the Passaic, Hudson, and Bergen counties. For instance, she ensured a law that broadened the definition of human trafficking back in 2011, when she first stepped into senate 2011. She also wrote a law that maintained civil service list eligibility for both national guards and reservists. During the pandemic, she was able to ensure our safety by signing public policies into law. This benefited local economics, education, and housing for the public.
Nellie Pou was running to represent congress in New Jersey’s 9th district. 464 committee members chose her as a candidate to replace and represent congress. Pou was very eager to be even placed in the ballot for November, and live up to the responsibilities that Bill Pascrell once had. Pou says, “It is an honor to follow in the footsteps of Bill Pascrell. We are united in continuing his fight for our district. I am ready to serve, listen and lead with courage, compassion, and commitment to our shared values.” She is looking to fulfill her role as the first female and latina in congress, and plans to help out district with her innovative ideas. NJEA members have already endorsed Nellie Pou. They say, “We know that she will honor the legacy of Bill Pascrell by building on the work he did to strengthen our public schools and support working families.”
A few high school kids were asked how they felt about Nellie Pou’s recent election, this is what they had to say about it. “As someone who used to live in Bergen County, I’m so grateful that she is currently representing us, she 100% had my vote.” says junior Nick Traveras of Wayne Hills High School. “Her willingness to step up on such a short notice ensured that she was committed to the role. And the fact that she immediately went into making laws for the public was strengthening her campaign.” says Jayden Garcia of Monsignor Scanlan High School. It is nice to see that the youth is comfortable with Nellie Pou and her campaign, and are eager to see how Pou will handle the role of representing the 9th district of New Jersey.
