Does Changing the Color of Our Facebook Pictures Help Fight Against ISIS?

After the horrifying attacks committed by ISIS in France that occurred Friday, November 13th, many Americans are doing their part by showing support for the French.

Some have posted pictures on Instagram saying, “Pray 4 Paris,” tweeted about how America stands behind France, or have changed the color of their profile picture on Facebook to red, white, and blue. Over the past few days, French colors have been flooding newsfeeds of millions.

However, I have yet to change the colors of my profile picture. And it’s not necessarily because I don’t support the French; I absolutely sympathize with the victims and their families. It’s more of the fact that that changing the color of your Facebook profile picture is not going to solve the problem.

Then what is going to solve the problem?

Honestly, I’m not exactly sure. And if I were, I would be working in the Obama administration currently, and not writing this article. However, one thing that could help is partisanship; the Republicans and the Democrats uniting on forming a solid plan on how they want to support the fight against ISIS.

Because taking the advice of Donald Trump and closing mosques isn’t going to help, and refusing to allow Syrian refugees live in certain states isn’t going to change the fact that 129 families are mourning the loss of their loved ones. What we can do is be open to the opinions of everyone and their ideas about how to minimize the situation. In a case as horrifying as this one, there really are no wrong answers.
