Top Three NBA Surprise Teams to Start the Season
November 13, 2017
This NBA season is off to a fiery start, and there are a few teams in the league that are surprisingly doing very well.
On the other hand, there are also teams like the Lebron James led Cleveland Cavaliers that are 3-5, who lost to all non-playoff teams from last season. Now, the focus is on these underdog teams, that are coming up big in the league.
Orlando Magic
The Orlando Magic are one of the most shocking teams to start the season. They are 6-2, and have three players averaging 20+ points per game. Athletic power-forward, Aaron Gordon, is one of the most improved players from last season. He is averaging career highs across the board, and has been extremely efficient over the course of these first two weeks. Evan Fournier, the athletic sharpshooter, is having the most efficient season he’s ever had. Maybe he is just extremely hot right now, but it doesn’t seem like he’s cooling off anytime soon. Lastly, we have Nikola Vucevic, who is the most surprising out of all these players. He has been in trade rumors for much of the last two seasons, but he might have just secured his spot at starting center for the foreseeable future. He’s averaging over 27 points per game in his first three, which is very good.
Boston Celtics
Readers may question why this team is on the list, but with the absence of Gordon Hayward, they have been notably one of the best teams in the league, and are currently on a six game winning streak. Rookie Jayson Tatum has been leading the charge at the forward spot, along with Jaylen Brown, who is a second year player out of Cal Berkeley, with both being extremely impressive so far. Both players are averaging 15 points per game respectively, but what’s most impressive about the team is their chemistry. Justin Daniels, a NBA fan, had something to say about these players, commenting, ¨Brown and Tatum have replaced Hayward very well and can carry the franchise once all the veterans retire.¨ Only four players have returned to training camp that were on last seasons roster, and the chemistry looks almost like a championship Spurs team. Kyrie Irving is doing what he does best, which is break down the defense and score buckets, but he’s become a much better defender and passer with his new squad. Many questioned whether Kyrie would be able to win without LeBron, but it seems as if its been the opposite way around, with LeBron in need of Kyrie. The Celtics also have Marcus Smart and Al Horford, who also have had a huge impact on the defensive end and overall.
Indiana Pacers
This is the most lucky team I have to say because the assets they traded for weren’t guaranteed to fill the void Paul George would be leaving. Over the summer, the Pacers traded all-star Paul George and got Domantis Sabonis and Victor Oladipo in return. Both of those players have been playing extremely well, with great numbers across the stat sheet. Victor Oladipo is currently averaging 26 points per game, which is more than Paul George. Obviously, PG has a lower usage rate than Oladipo, but that is still extremely impressive. Domantis Sabonis is averaging a double double, and is beating on the boards as of right now. The Pacers are 5-3 at the moment, even though they were expected to have a record around 1-7 or 2-6 at this time in the season. It has been an all-around team effort, in their pursuit to make the post season.
