Donald Trump Under Pressure to Help Puerto Rico

Hurricane Maria made direct landfall on the island of Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017, destroying the island entirely.

Two weeks after the hurricane,  the island is still in shambles.Despite several efforts to help the island, little has been done and the 3.4 million U.S. citizens are still without power, fuel or clean drinking water.

“We still need some more help. This is clearly a critical disaster in Puerto Rico,” said Puerto Rico’s Gov, Ricardo Rossello.

“We are literally unloading water and supplies on an hourly basis, and we’re going to be deploying navy ships,” said Donald Trump recently. Despite the President’s remark, very little aid has reached Puerto Rico. This is because of the 100 years old Jones Act. According to CNN the act requires all goods transported between US ports to be built, owned, and operated by an American. This has been a major hindrance in helping the already suffering island recover because it means that other nearby countries can not help.

On September 28, Trump waived the Jones Act after pressure from several sources including Rossello.

Many news outlets and people are saying that Trump is not helping Puerto Rico as much as he can. Other sources claim that he is giving more than enough, but it is impossible to restore the island.

“The president is probably doing a lot, but since there is so much damage, he can’t do it as quick as everyone was hoping he would do it,”  said  Savanna Brogan, a sophomore at Wayne Hills.

The President visited Puerto Rico on October 5, 2017 to assess the damage.
