When people think of Stephen Colbert, they think of a late night Comedy Central talk show host who makes people laugh. Colbert is not very involved in politics, as he would rather crack jokes about politics and politicians rather than participate.

However, Colbert took the joking a little too far for some people’s liking. Colbert landed in hot water after a May 1 broadcast of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”, when during his monologue, he made a comment that outraged many. He said, “The only thing [Trump’s] mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c— holder.”

This was referencing President Donald J. Trump’s alleged ties to Russia during his campaign. Colbert’s remark was bleeped and his mouth was blurred as the show was broadcasted across the nation.

The FCC, or Federal Communications Commission, received thousands of complaints following the broadcast, which prompted a review of the comment. It was ultimately decided that Colbert would not face any sanctions or fines for his comment.

The FCC issued a comment that stated, “Consistent with standard operating procedure, the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau has reviewed the complaints and the material that was the subject of these complaints. The Bureau has concluded that there was nothing actionable under the FCC’s rules.”

“Although his comment wasn’t the most appropriate, I think it was right that he wasn’t penalized for it because it’s a late night talk show so obviously there will be some vulgar remarks since more mature audiences are watching.”
