Rise in Hate Crimes Since Presidential Election

A spike in Hate crimes, including attacks against American Jews and Muslims, has occurred in several U.S. cities in 2016. This increase began with the election and has continued on according to data collected by researchers at California State University, San Bernardino.

More than 700 hate crimes across the country had been reported in nearly two weeks since election day by the southern poverty law center. Among the reports, it was noted that 27 incidents were directed at trump supporters. Showing an instant increase immediately following the elections.

New York City has had an increase of 24 percent in hate crimes, the highest on over a decade. Along with Chicago which also saw an increase of 24 percent, the highest since 2010. Cincinnati, Ohio. saw a jump of 34 percent. Montgomery County in Maryland had an increase of more than 42 percent. Showing a trend in Major cities across the country post-election.

WHHS history teacher, Robert Hittinger stated, “The president should be making a strong statement against hate crimes, or the hate crime rate will just continue to rise.”
