Bracket Busters: Who Is Most Likely To Be an Upset
March 17, 2017
When you make your bracket for this year’s March Madness Tournament, make sure you watch out for those 11, 12, and 13 seeds, as they could bust it.
In the East, the games that will most likely end in an upset are #5 Virginia vs. #12 UNC Wilmington and #4 Florida vs. #13 ETSU. Virginia, while having an elite defense, is very anemic on the offensive end and might not be able to keep up with UNC Wilmington, who is one of the most efficient three point shooting teams that doesn’t turn the ball over much. This could result in a low scoring game, but the Seahawks could come out with a win. Florida, who is without their rim protector, are not as strong a team as before their big man went down. ETSU is among the top teams in the nation when it comes to forcing turnovers, and they have an experienced roster. This game could end up in the Buccaneers laps as a huge upset.
In the Midwest, games such as #5 Iowa State vs. #12 Nevada as well as #6 Creighton vs. #11 Rhode Islands could end up with the underdog on top. Iowa State has in recent years been upset by worse teams in the tournament. They play an underrated Nevada team that boast three unbelievable three point shooters and a great rim protector in Cameron Oliver. Creighton was one of the best teams early in the season, but the loss of guard Maurice Watson Jr. could be too much for the Bluejays to handle. Rhode Island is an elite defensive team and could beat Creighton.
In the West, the only upset that seems reasonable is #11 Xavier over #6 Maryland. Maryland is a team that relies solely on their best player, Melo Trimble. Maryland is only as good as Trimble is, and Xavier is a team that has a lot of size and is excellent on the boards.
Michael Blumenberg, a junior, commented, “I think that Xavier over Maryland is the most likely upset. I feel like Maryland’s ranking is a little to high for their talent level.”
The fact that little known mid-majors can pull an upset over some well known perennial tournament teams is what makes March Madness so fun. Stay tuned for the results of the first round.
