The topic of abortion has been argued since the 1800s, but has just recently hit an all time low. The number of lethal procedures has dropped below a million, the first time since 1975 according to a new report done by the Guttmacher institute.

“Not that I am against abortion, but I think that the drop in abortion rate is a good thing because it shows people are becoming smarter when it comes to birth control options,” says WHHS junior Diana Rondi.

The rate has fallen to about 14.6 abortions per 1,000 women 15 to 44 years old in 2014, a decline of 14 percent since its most recent survey in 2011, according to the Guttmacher institute studies.

“The falling abortion number is due to the ceaseless advocacy and ministry of the pro-life community in neighborhoods all around this country,” a quote from Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission. Assuming that the drop in abortion is due to all the attention drawn to the subject, most would predict that the abortion rate will drop even further.

Recent abortion laws have also had a huge impact on the decrease of abortion rates. 19 states have passed 60 abortion restrictions as of 2016, and the number laws are continuing to grow with President Donald Trump now in office.
