NYPD Lends a Hand to Illegal Immigrants
March 2, 2017
President Donald J. Trump’s questionable tactics against illegal immigrants have come to a halt in New York City.
James O’Neill, the police commissioner since 2014, reacted by sending an internal memo which forbade the department from enforcing the administration warrants issued by immigration federal agents.
The main push for this declaration is to make sure that all people are not afraid to contact the police when in danger. This is because the idea of their immigration status becoming known to the police holds them back due to the fear of being deported.
Their apparent justification for not following the federal orders is because they do not conduct civil immigration enforcement. Therefore by following the orders hey would be overstepping the boundary of the department.
Although it didn’t change the policy of the New York City Police Department, O’Neill made sure to send the memo as a strict reminder of the Department’s duties.
Sophomore Olivia Minervini said, “It’s interesting how the police can not follow federal orders, I didn’t know they could do that.”
