Students Express Mixed Reactions to The Grammys 2017
March 5, 2017
The performances at the 2017 Grammys were as many expected; numerous famous singers and figures on stage by singer, making political statements, etc. WHHS students gave their input on the night.
The most favored performance was Ed Sheeran’s solo of his popular song, Shape Of You. “This performance was simple, yet special. He actually made the song in front of everyone. I’m his biggest fan,” said sophomore Emma Lombardi. Many students loved the way he created the song by using just a microphone, an acoustic guitar, and a keyboard. The singer did not use an in-ear monitor and he created the song without any guidance.
Some students were surprised to see the singers of 21 Pilots accept their Grammy award without pants. “I found it really odd how they didn’t wear pants when going up on stage, but after hearing the reason why, I found it funny,” said sophomore Marisa Cuciti. When the two men were younger, they made a promise that if they won a Grammy, they would accept it without pants. In fact, they made this pact together at a young age watching the award ceremony without pants on.
There were many mixed emotions about Beyonce’s performance. Some thought it was beautiful and that it fit for the queen bee; others thought it was over the top. “I liked the fact that she still got up and on the stage with her pregnancy, but I felt as though the impersonation of a goddess was too much,” said sophomore Riya Patel. There also seemed to be some confusion. “I just did not understand it. I mean, I get that she is pregnant and people are happy for her, but I do not understand why she had to sit on a chair that slowly fell backward,” said Rachael Ahn, freshman.
On the other hand, some students loved it. “Queen Bee struck again… her performance was beautiful. I loved how she included her daughter and mother in it as well,” said sophomore Angelica Papadatos.
There were many other famous figures that performed during the 2017 Grammys including Katy Perry, The Weeknd, Bruno Mars, Adele, Chance the Rapper, Lukas Grahm, etc.
There were and still are several varying opinions, so feel free to express yours below!
