A catastrophic landslide took place in Santa Catarina, Guatemala, last week. The death toll recently rose to 220, with 350 people yet to be found. Rescue workers along with relatives of victims are trying to dig up bodies of those were not able to evacuate in time. Many families were found dead, huddled together in their homes. Homes were obliterated and personal items are never to be seen again. Guatemala is filled with so much culture and it is a shame to have so many families affected by these landslides every year. Senior Christine Han, has been to Guatemala before and says, “It was crazy being the first foreigners that some Guatemalans have ever seen before. Going to such remote villages that aren’t even on a Google search shows how much culture there is to know”. She has witnessed how hard the people of Guatemala have worked for their homes and families.

The country’s government is attempting to use donations to rebuild the homes and restore the land but nothing is set in stone. Hundreds of people were buried alive and the whole country is left in fear of future landslides that may occur.
