The Mid Season Update: College Basketball
January 17, 2017
College football is officially over. College basketball, the stage is yours. Everybody will now be focusing on college basketball. So far, college basketball has been exciting. There have been tons of upsets and it’s barely even January.
There have been four number one teams in the nation. It first started off with Duke who came into the season number one on the Preseason AP Poll. Duke lost to Kansas in a heartbreaker when Frank Mason III hit a dagger at the buzzer to sink the Blue Devils. The Blue Devils are 14-3 this season and are led by veterans Luke Kennard, Amile Jefferson, and Grayson Allen. They also have a talented freshman group with Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum, Frank Jackson, and Marques Bolden. They will all likely be selected in the NBA Draft. There has been much controversy with Grayson Allen and his tripping incidents. It has been his third incident in his collegiate career. He was then suspended by legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski, and stripped of his team captaincy.
Santiago Gonzalez, a freshman, had plenty to say about Duke. “Duke is a great team. I think they have the best coaching staff and the best ratio of veteran players to freshman players. Duke should win the championship this year in my opinion.”
The next number one team was Kentucky. They are led by Hall of Fame coach John Calipari. As usual, Kentucky has a high-caliber recruiting class. The class is led by studs De’aaron Fox, Malik Monk, and Edrice “Bam” Adebayo. They are all likely going in the lottery of the NBA Draft. They also have veterans in Isaiah Briscoe and Derek Willis. This team will look to make it to the national championship as they are 13-2 on the season and looking to cement their place as one of the best college basketball teams of all time.
After Kentucky got upset there had to be a new number 1 team. Who better than the Villanova Wildcats. The Wildcats are coming off one of their greatest season’s ever last year. The reigning national champions are doing excellent this year, too and will try to match last year’s success. They have one of the most debonair coaches in the game in Jay Wright. The team this year is very talented. They have Josh Hart, who is a Wooden Award nominee and is averaging a team leading 19.8 points per game. Kris Jenkins is also having an excellent season, as he is averaging 14.2 points per game and averaging 4.1 rebounds per game. You also may know him as the guy who hit the game winning shot in last years title game. Villanova was then upset by Butler after being number one for five weeks in a row.
Here is something shocking. Baylor has never been ranked number one ever in school history. Well, that changed this year as they were ranked number one. They are having an excellent season this year. They are lead by junior stud Johnathan Motley, who is averaging 15.3 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per game. So far this year, they were one of the last teams to be undefeated. That changed when they were upset by West Virginia. There number one ranking came and left in a blink of an eye.
This year’s freshman class is ridiculously amazing. It is led by Lonzo Ball who is a potential top two pick in the draft and he is helping his UCLA team who is 16-1. He is second in the collegiate level with assists. Markelle Fultz is carrying this Washington team on his back. He is just a triple-double machine this year. Josh Jackson is an athletic freak as he has some of the most electrifying dunks this year. Kentucky, as usual, always has great freshmen too.
There are also some under the radar teams, too. Butler is having an amazing season. So far this year, they are 3-1 against top ten teams. They should be a dark horse team going into march. Notre Dame always makes a deep run during tournament time. They have Steve Vasturia who is a lights out three point shooter. The team you should not overlook is Gonzaga. They are the last undefeated team to remain. They are looking to get back to the tournament and advance past the elite eight.
This year has been amazing so far. Will see if their are more upsets and any surprise teams that make it to the tournament.
