Fort Lauderdale Airport Shootin
January 11, 2017
A 26-year-old man is suspected of killing five people and wounding several others at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Relatives of the killer, who the police say opened fired at the Florida airport, say that he had a history of mental-health issues.
26-year-old Esteban Santiago took his 9mm handgun and started firing it at travelers. “It is devastating to see that even after so many arsenal incidents, there is no restriction on gun control,” says Nicole Joachim a WHHS student. The shooting sent the airport terminal into complete chaos. Travelers were running for cover, and spreading rumors of hearing more gunshots and a possible second shooter. It has been reported that about 40 other people were injured just trying to scramble out of the airport or for cover. Many travelers left the airport with sprains, bruises, and broken bones after the attack took place.
A few months before this action took place he had a mental evaluation after a bizarre visit to and FBI headquarters in Alaska. He told FBI agents he was hearing voices in his head, and that a US intelligence was directing him to watch ISIS videos. Santiago was immediately transferred into authorities and demanded a mental-health evaluation. Police officers along with other agents believe this was a trigger for his sporadic action. Santiago did not resist and he was immediately taken into custody.
