Swim Team is Getting Ready for Another Winning Season
December 21, 2016
The Girls and Boys swim team at WHHS are currently working to reach all of their goals, in order to qualify for the State Championships in February. The girl’s team have won 1 meet out of their 3 and the boys have had two wins and two losses.
This year the girls are mostly focusing on their rebuilding year mostly because the team lost a lot of seniors from last year, yes they’re still a competitive team but they don’t have quite the depth that they had in the past. Coach Michael Shale notes that the team’s top priority of this year is each teammate’s personal advancement.
“We’ve had a lot of success early on,” Shale explained, “there was strong senior leadership. With the seniors graduating, the biggest goal we have is individual improvement.”
Despite some minor setbacks, Coach Shale remains optimistic about the team and its future.
He wants to make sure that the team will work harder and bring their times down.
The most challenging obstacle ahead for the team is keeping up their streak of winning counties and the leagues. With their current record of six wins out of seven years, the swimmers are under a lot of pressure to maintain their title. Although a victory would certainly be icing on their cake, Coach Shale affirms that winning is not the team’s first ambition.
“If we swim our best and swim our times, and if we lose, as long as we are constantly improving and working as a team there is really nothing to be upset about. That is really what the coaches look for.”
Their next meet is January 7th at PCTI where they will be competing against all high schools in the county. So come on out and support the swim team on their road to States!
