The Most Desired Young Adult Novels of September

By Samantha Segreto

A countless amount of books are sold in places all around the world each and every day, composed of unique characters and exquisite situations that are sometimes completely fictional when compared to real-life events. However, not all of these beautifully written novels have a chance to be put in the spotlight, and sometimes they are even completely unrecognized. Fortunately, editors of Goodreads have selected five significant young adult novels of the month that can easily be considered some of the most remarkable. These books include Dumplin’  by Julie Murphy, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee, Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman, and What We Saw by Aaron Hartzler.

To delve further into the stories, Dumplin’  by Julie Murphy is a specifically inspiring book because it addresses the determination of women and the battle of overcoming insecurities in our society. The main character, Willowdean Dickson is an overweight teenage girl who has always felt comfortable in her own skin until she falls for a charming boy with the name of Bo who has given her the need to prove her strength and inner beauty. As a result, she enters the Miss Teen Blue Bonnet Pageant to “show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.” Throughout each and every page, Dumplin’ is a motivational literary work that is guaranteed to steal your heart. It is stories like these that bring out the true delight of literature from the thrilling sensations of Six of Crows to the contemporary fiction of What We Saw, each novel mentioned is most definitely one worth reading. Maddy Carlo, sophomore of WHHS, stated, “I haven’t read any of these top five mentioned, but I love reading in general because it’s basically like a little movie display going on in your head where you can imagine the characters in the way you want and think about situations from the book in your own mind. Reading is a way to truly let your imagination flow.”
