Thousands Hunt For Safe Asylum in Europe

By Rachel Mazer

Everyday thousands of Syrians attempt to flee their own country and find a safe asylum.  The latest news on this crisis comes from Syrian president, Bashar Assad, he says, “If you are worried about them [refugees], stop supporting terrorists.”  Assad believes terrorists are the “core” issue of the refugee situation.  Just last week nearly 8,000 people migrated across the border of Serbia and Croatia.  Croatia is so overwhelmed that they are threatening to shut down the border between them and Serbia if any more refugees should come. “This an absolutely heartbreaking situation because most of these people are trying to do the best for their family and the U.S not taking in more than 10,000 refugees, we should be doing much more,” says history teacher Christopher Van Ness.

The refugee crisis has been an ongoing event since March 2011.  Through the years the civil war across Syria is astonishing; an estimated nine million Syrians have fled to neighboring European countries. Over the course of four years there are over 4 million registered refugees in neighboring countries such as, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey.  Extremist groups such as ISIS have also increased the number of deaths and home displacements in the Middle East.  The United States has given $4 billion in humanitarian aid, but we are only expected to take in 10,000 refugees.
