George Zimmerman Auctioning Weapon Used to Murder Trayvon Martin
May 23, 2016
The second amendment of the Bill of Rights reads, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Depending on your political beliefs, you could interpret that as a license to carry around firearms wherever and whenever you please. Or you might believe that means that you have the right to bear arms, however with that power comes responsibility.
I’m on the latter and more liberal end of that statement.
Trayvon Martin was one of many young adults to suffer from an act of senseless gun violence. If you recall back in February of 2012, George Zimmerman, a 28-year old man shot an unarmed Martin in Sanford, FL. Immediately after the shooting, Zimmerman was taken into custody, however within a few hours he was released due to the “Florida Stand Your Ground” statute, which allowed Zimmerman to say that this was an act of self defense.
It’s been over four years since Martin was shot and killed, and since then a lot of debate has taken place over gun violence and the “Black Lives Matter” campaign. Now there has been a disturbing update regarding Zimmerman.
As of last week, Zimmerman has planned to auction the gun that killed Martin in 2012. Apparently, he tried to sell the “American firearm icon” on UnitedGunGroup.com. Todd Underwood, owner of the site, told CNN that “the website would continue to facilitate lawful sales despite the criticism it has faced for allowing Zimmerman to list his gun.”
On Wednesday May 18th, the gun finally sold at auction for $120,000. That may seem like a lot of money to anyone, however it is not enough to repay the Martins for the death of their son. $120,000 for the firearm that killed an innocent young man with so much life ahead of him. No amount of money will ever be enough to cure this insurmountable problem of gun violence.
