NHS Upcoming Events This Spring

Spring has sprung and the National Honors Society is busier than the bees! There are many exciting upcoming events for this spring.

Andrew Poalillo, the adviser, enthusiastically said, “I am most excited for the FOWA Animal Rescue Tricky Tray because who doesn’t love animals!”

“My second favorite event would be the Lafayette Color Run but only if I get to throw the colors at people as they run by.” Other NHS members have their favorite volunteer activity in mind too. Mallika Venkatachalam, senior and President of NHS “loves all the events that we do with with the elementary schools.” “We get to interact with the little kids and show the parents what NHS is all about. “When I see how grateful they are after an event has concluded it is such a good feeling because we know we really helped someone out.”

Sam Applebaum, also a senior at Wayne Hills, and  enjoys the friendship circle. “Friendship circle is basically a social gathering of children with mental disabilities. We all get together and hang out, and it really puts a smile on their faces.”

Ongoing events throughout the year include tutoring/Homework Help, Browse and shop and an exercise class for special needs children. NHS tutors provide homework Help occurs every day in the media center during all three lunch periods. If a student is struggling in a particular class, they can visit waynehillsnhs.org and ask to be assigned a tutor and then they can set a time and place.  Browse and Shop takes place every Thursday from 3-6 in the Preakness School located on Hamburg Turnpike. Participants help organize items and run the cash register, almost like a thrift shop. As for the exercise class, it is held every Saturday from 10-11 at Schuyler- Colfax Middle School. At these classes, volunteers will encourage special needs children to participate in various activities and games to help the kids not only stay in shape but also have a lot of fun doing it.

Everyone has a different favorite in mind but what they have in common is the desire to help others. All of our members have been chosen based on their character; they all do their best to improve our community any way they can.
