Ritik’s Picks for MLB World Series

By Ritik Naik

The year of 2016 is about the young talent that is in the league as well as the best going to different teams. Zack Greinke left the Dodgers for the Arizona Diamondbacks which was the shocker of the offseason. Johnny Cueto went to the San Francisco Giants to lengthen their already above average rotation. Meanwhile, in the National League, the defending champions, Kansas City Royals, didn’t do anything flashy. They made sure they re-signed Alex Gordon and kept their bullpen intact. The teams around them improved their rosters in hopes of dethroning the once again World Series favorites. The Detroit Tigers made their lineup even more of a threat by signing Justin Upton to a six-year deal. They also signed Jordan Zimmerman, former Washington National, to a five-year deal. Overall, there are teams from every division that have a chance of winning the World Series. The also favored Cubs come from a division that is considered the hardest in the league. The Pittsburgh Pirates made it to the wild card before being defeated by the Cubs. The St. Louis Cardinals also made it to the playoffs and lost to the same Chicago Cubs. This year, the Cubs are short-handed due to the loss of Kyle Schwarber for the season. Filling his spot would be a difficult task but their outfield depth is a big part of why they are projected to win 100 games. But win projections don’t get it right every time. The Washington Nationals were favored to win 100 games as well last year. They ended up losing the division and missing the playoffs. The Toronto Blue Jays have arguably the best offense in the game with Jose Bautista right in the middle of it. They have a lineup with not one easy out and can hit home runs in a hurry. But pitching wins championships.

Freshman Mark Noschese said this of the rotation: “It’s pretty simple and well-known by this point. The Mets have arguably one of the best rotations of all time. And with the best of all time, I would hope that they would be able to get a ring.”  Even though they lost in the World Series, they have the best starting rotation in the major leagues. What makes them so good is the depth of their rotation as well as their youth. Their oldest pitcher is Jacob deGrom who will turn 28 in mid-June. Noah Syndergaard has looked terrific in his first two two starts of the season shutting out the Kansas City Royals and striking out 12 against the Miami Marlins. One can  argue that they are a better overall team than they were last year. Their offense has improved through signings and trades which will help support their great pitching. The New York Mets will win the World Series and will end the pain of Met fans across the country from Matt Harvey’s hiccup in the World Series.
