NCAA March Madness Champions: The Villanova Wildcats
April 5, 2016
After a long season with many upsets and heart-breakers, the NCAA National Championship Game finally arrived. The second seeded Villanova Wildcats were set to play the first seeded North Carolina Tar heels on Monday, April 4th in Houston, Texas at NRG Stadium. It was a game for the ages. By the end of the first half, Carolina had a five point lead and was only twenty minutes away from securing a National Championship. Villanova started the second half on a 19-7 run and took a small lead with only ten minutes remaining. The game went back and forth, neither team wanting to ruin the opportunity of a National Championship but, with only five minutes left, Villinova started to pull away. They were up by ten points and couldn’t miss a shot. Joel Berry was North Carolina’s leading scorer in the first half, but he was nowhere to be found in the second half. Someone had to step up if North Carolina wanted to win.
Seniors Brice Johnson and Marcus Paige were not going to go down without a fight, if this was going to be their last college game, they wanted to win. The two seniors scored 12 of North Carolina’s 17 points in the final minutes of the game, bringing their team back and making it an interesting game. With only 22 seconds remaining, Marcus Paige made a layup, putting North Carolina only down by one point, 72-71. On the ensuing inbound Brice Johnson fouled Villanova’s Josh Hart and sent him to the free throw line with 14 seconds left in the game. He would make both free throws giving Villanova a three point lead. Villanova called a timeout to setup their defense, allowing North Carolina to setup a play to tie the game. Joel Berry dribbled up the court and passed to Marcus Paige across the court. The pass was almost intercepted but Marcus Paige recovered and setup for the game tying three. While in the air a defender caused him the alter his shot, and he still made it. This remarkable double clutch off balance three was something you would find in a fairytale.
The game was now tied at 74, and Villanova had less then five seconds to make a game winning shot. Ryan Arcidiacono received the inbound pass from Kris Jenkins and dribbled up the court. The clock ticked down and with less than two seconds left he passed back to Kris Jenkins who set his feet and fired. The buzzer sounded and the shot fell. Kris Jenkins made the game-winning shot for Villanova and they are NCAA National Champions, winning by a final score of 77-74.
Teachers and students alike were just shocked by how crazy the game was and many claimed it was the best NCAA Championship game of all time. Kris Jenkins will be forever remembered in NCAA history for making this shot. The 67th and final game of the 2016 NCAA March Madness Tournament ends with Villanova beating North Carolina 77-74.
