Brussels Attacks
March 25, 2016
Two explosions erupted in a major airport and another in a metro station in Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday, March 22, killing 30 and injuring 230 others. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks, however authorities have not yet confirmed this. There are three official suspects of the bombings, with two believed to be killed in suicide bombings. The third is believed to have planted a bomb and leave. The authorities have asked that the public participates in this manhunt for the wanted man.
A taxi driver called the authorities after seeing the surveillance video of the suspects (two dressed in black, and the third standing to the side), providing the address that he picked the believed suspects up at before taking them to the airport. This information prompted a house raid, in which authorities found a nail bomb, an ISIS flag, and chemical products.
Belgium security sources have explained that it is “assumed” that the attackers came from the same network behind the Paris attacks in November. The Brussels attacks also followed after authorities closed in on Salah Abdeslam, one of the suspects of the Paris attacks.
The attacks location being in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is extremely significant. Brussels holds the location of the head of European Union and also the headquarters of NATO, making it one of the most secure cities in all of Europe. This information is vital to predicting future terrorist attacks, even in a secure and strong nation like the United States.
“Knowing that Brussels is such a secure capital is really frightening for the rest of the world. The terrorist attacks can be connected to so many others, and it is very sad that news like this is becoming “normal.” It is time’s like this when the world needs to come together, despite differences, and take steps to providing a more secure world for the future, using the information we now know,” says Senior Nicole Loffredo.
The governments of Belgium and the United States and supporting nations will continue to work together in the coming days to investigate the details behind the attacks.
