Sony Drops Dr. Luke Rumors
March 23, 2016
A month after pop star Kesha Rose Sebert was denied a preliminary injunction against her producer, Lukasz “Dr.Luke” Gottwald, rumors of Sony dropping Gottwald’s contract have quickly been shot down by his legal team.
In response to the rapid spread of rumors, an attorney for Dr. Luke told EW news that “This is not true. Luke has an excellent relationship with Sony. His representatives are in regular contact with executives at the highest levels at Sony and this has never come up.”
Kesha’s charges of abuse against Dr. Luke began in 2014, and he has repeatedly denied any form of sexual or drug-related abuse in court and on social media. As Kesha struggles to get out of her contract with Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records, an imprint of Sony, her fans and other celebrities continue to rally behind the #freekesha hashtag and protest at Sony headquarters. Her fans dropped off a petition with over 411,000 signatures for Sony to drop the producer.
Despite the protests, Sony has continued to stand by the longtime producer, Gottwald. Sony’s attorney, Scott Edelman. spoke out about the issue on February 26.
“Sony has made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement, or interaction with Luke whatsoever, but Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha,” says Edelman.
“The accusations against Dr. Luke are horrific. As a Kesha fan, I truly pray that Sony does, in fact, end the contract so she can continue to make music.” expressed Michelle Morelli, junior.
In addition to Kesha’s fan base, Lady Gaga, Lorde, Ariana Grande, Kelly Clarkson, who is a former client of Dr. Luke, and dozens of other celebrities have hit social media to share their support for the star.
It is still yet to be known what will happen to Dr. Luke, but many thoughts go out to Kesha.
