Sex Harassment Case Filed Against Former UN Climate Official

Former chairman of the U.N. climate panel, Rajendra Pachauri, 75, was charged with stalking, sexual harassment and criminal intimidation of a woman this past Tuesday.

Investigation into the case began after complaints from colleagues at The Energy Research Institute. Despite Pachauri denying the charges, he has resigned from the position after the story was revealed in various Indian newspapers. After such claims, another woman who worked alongside him for over a year has come forward with claims of sexual harassment. Pachauri headed the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) for over thirty years.

“It is not uncommon for a boss or someone in a position of power to abuse their authority in such horrific ways” said WHHS junior Sarah Mintz. “I hope that justice can be served and that the victims recover”.

In addition to the police investigation, TERI’s internal complaints committee investigated the case as well, and after talking to an additional 50 coworkers, concluded that the allegations against Pachauri were valid. The trial has been set to begin on April 23, 2016.
