Stars Shine Bright at the Oscars

It’s the peak of the award show season; the time to pull out your absolute best Marchesa gown; the time that actors and actresses wait for all year long. Yep you guessed it. It’s the Academy Awards. While it was hard to forget for most of this year’s Oscar controversy (I mean how could we with host, Chris Rock bringing it up every five minutes), that didn’t take away from this year’s impressive performances that were honored.

One of the performers of the show, Sam Smith, won an award for Best Original Song, for “Writing’s on the Wall” which was featured in the new James Bond film, “Spectre.” Then came Best Director, which was taken home by Alejandro González Iñárritu, director of “The Revenant.” This is not only Iñárritu’s second win, but his second win in two years. In the category of Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Mark Rylance won for “Bridge of Spies,” and Alicia Vikander was honored for her outstanding performance in “The Danish Girl.”

It was time for the next three awards that the audience had been waiting all night for; Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Motion Picture. Not only was this Brie Larson’s first nomination, but it was her first win for the disturbing thriller, “Room.” Finally, the award for Best Actor was about to presented. Twitter users around the world were holding their breath; the world stopped for thirty seconds waiting for one name to be called. “The award for Best Actor goes to…..Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant.” He did it! “The pure physical hardship of playing the role was incredible. I think that role is so taxing and to make it that believable makes him worthy of the award,” said Film Studies teacher Susan Price. WHHS students also agreed with the Academy’s decision, “He’s so talented and it’s so great to see him receive the award after all these years,” said senior Jenna Bellafatto. For most viewers, they considered Leo’s victory to be the end of the show.

However, there was still the most coveted award to be given out. When Spotlight was named Best Picture, it wasn’t a surprise. Tom McCarthy’s masterpiece took home the grand prize at the end of the night.
