There’s a possible upcoming TikTok ban coming up on April 5, 2025. People are saying the last ban that happened on January 19, 2025 was just a practice round to see how it would go.
Under the timeline set by President Trump’s executive order on January 20, TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, was given until April 5 to divest from the platform. Several buyers have expressed interest in acquiring TikTok’s U.S. operations, including bids from YouTube star MrBeast and a joint proposal from former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and “Shark Tank” investor Kevin O’Leary. Amazon has also expressed interest.
In recent days, Trump also stated he would consider lowering tariff rates on China to gain Beijing’s support for the sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations and avoid a ban on the popular app. We asked some Wayne Hills students what they think about the possible upcoming ban.
Freshman Layah Colabelli said, “I think TikTok is a great platform for small businesses and creators. It’s a great way for the new generation to share their voice. I don’t think the app should be banned because of all those reasons.“
Freshman Lakshmi Bhimavarapu said, “I love watching TikTok and especially reposting TikTok’s. I feel like TikTok is an amazing app and I don’t know what I would do without TikTok.“
Freshman Melania DeMayo said, “I enjoy watching and making TikTok’s. And I hope this possible upcoming ban is not true.“
A lot of students think that TikTok should not be banned for multiple reasons. Trump predicted he could nail down an outline for a deal for a TikTok sale by next week. He had previously suggested the White-led house talks have made progress in hammering out a deal. Such a deal may spin off the U.S. operations and dilute Chinese ownership to below the 20% threshold required by law. Do you think TikTok is coming back after the ban like last time or not?
