This past week at Wayne Hills, the media Specialist, Mrs. Caldwell, set up the Makerspace in the Media Center!
The makerspace was set up to let students know about all the fun activities that are around all school year. Not many people use the activities located in the library, and Maker’s Week is set up to remind students about how much fun they are. Sophomore students Carli Shultz and Eden Hession took part in the arts-and-crafts activities as they worked on shrinky-dinks together. When asked if they were encouraged to revisit the Media Center, “After Maker’s Week, we feel like there’s a lot of fun things at the Media Center that we haven’t tried. We’ll definitely come back whenever we have free time.”
Media Center specialist, Mrs. Caldwell, spoke on how she felt how Maker’s Week went, “I believe Maker’s Week was a huge success; everyone seems to be really enjoying themselves. I’ve had a number of people come and ask if they can do things once Maker’s Week ends, which is the whole point because all of this is available year round!”
Some students are confused as to why the Maker’s Week has cut into class time, but most don’t mind. Sophomore Uygar Oruc had some thoughts on Maker’s Week: “I don’t really know why I’m here, but I find it’s an outlet for creativity, and it allows me to express myself by creating things. This is my first time here.”
It is important to note that Mrs. Caldwell did fund for this Maker’s Week with two $500 grants. One of the $500s came from the 2025 STEM month mini-grant award from New Jersey STEM Pathways and another $500 mini-grant from New Jersey’s Maker’s Day.
Although Maker’s Week has passed, Mrs. Caldwell still encourages students to come by the Media Center and still be creative, as the makerspace only serves as an example of what the Media Center has to offer for kids who wish to be creative.
