At Super Bowl 59, the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs went up against each other and the Eagles won with a score of 40-22. During half-time, Kendrick Lamar, who currently has 22 Grammys, performed with special guest SZA, who has 5 Grammys. Actor Samuel L. Jackson made an appearance dressed up as Uncle Sam and Serena Williams, a famous tennis player, was seen dancing on a stage to Kendrick Lamar’s song “Not Like Us”. It is rumored that Serena Williams and Drake dated on and off from 2011 to 2015, fueling the controversy between Kendrick and Drake.
Kendrick Lamar performed the half-time show at the Super Bowl with SZA and many people enjoyed it, specifically when SZA came out. Sophomore student at Wayne Hills High School Olivia Kaplan said, “I thought the halftime show was good and my favorite part was when SZA came out. I enjoyed the symbolism, it was very cool to include. Kendrick’s outfit was lowkey mid though, it reminded me of Rihannas’s halftime show too because of the colors”. She was not the only one who did not like his outfit, many other students agreed and said his outfit was bad, especially because of his jeans.
Students liked the culture he incorporated into his show, such as Jasmine Clemente. She said, “When I watched it I kinda enjoyed it and I saw there was a lot of symbolism. I agreed with the message and I like how it was more than just a show, there was a story behind it”. Another student who also spoke highly of it was Emma Grealy, she said, “I liked the show but I didn’t really notice the symbolism until I watched a TikTok that explained it. My favorite part is when SZA came out because I really like her music”.
Wayne Hills High School student Gillian Baccaro said, “It was a very good half-time show and my favorite part was when SZA came out. As a dancer, I did like the choreography and I didn’t notice the symbolism until after when people started to talk about it”.
Many people appreciated that aspect of the show, and the backup dancers did a wonderful job adding depth to the performance. The choreography was eye-catching and the build-up until he performed “Not Like Us” was anticipating.
