With the Wayne Hills fencing team finishing their season at states recently, it feels necessary to give credit where it is due and recognize the phenomenal run that our team has been on as of lately. Both teams have been making waves for quite a while now, with previous accolades hanging proudly on banners around the Gifford Gym. Across all three sword variants present in fencing (saber, foil, and épée), there is not a weakness to be found, with all teams performing with high skill and consistency all season long.
The boys team, under instruction of Coach Maxwell and Coach Cubas, made it to the first round of states this year. In a conversation with junior Devin Wehmeyer, an exceptionally dominant épée specialist, it was made clear that he was confident about his performance this year. Known for his aggressive style, Devin has been a force since he joined the team his freshman year. With a commanding record of twenty seven wins and only a single loss, it makes sense as to why he would feel this way, as he has a nearly perfect record. Even going back to previous years, he’s been taking home victories against whomever he finds at the end of his blade.
It is important to note that success is not only seen on the boys team. The girls team, under Coach Caamano and Coach Cubas, also blew their competition out of the water. Their most notable accolades this year are coming third in districts and second at counties, two feats that prove without a doubt the talent among the roster. With these key top three performances in major tournaments this year, it’s safe to say that we can expect more great things to come from this side of our fencing team in the future.
Unfortunately, both the boys and girls teams got out in their first round of states, meaning they will no longer be competing in tournaments this year. However, this doesn’t mean there isn’t hope for the future. There are plenty of opportunities for next year as the roaster continues to improve.
When asked what she enjoyed most about the sport, junior Sadie Valencia, a member of the fencing team, responded with, “I love the individuality that comes within fencing, but I also love that the team has each others backs no matter what.” This is a heartwarming look into the close dynamics and bonds between the members of both the girls and boys fencing teams.
Both teams could not have done it without the motivation and expertise of Coach Maxwell, Coach Caamano, and Coach Cubas. The Wayne Hills Fencing Program comes from a history of stellar bouts, so look forward to hearing even more good news next year!
