The NFL season has come to its most grand conclusion, and the Philadelphia Eagles are the 2024-25 Super Bowl Champions. It was an absolute show for fans, putting on a clinic against the Kansas City Chiefs and winning 40 – 22.
The Eagles opened up the scoring on their first drive with their signature brotherly shove, giving Jalen Hurts a rushing touchdown. After that point, the game was nowhere near close, as Kansas City didn’t put a point up on the board until the 3rd quarter. By then, the Eagles had already put up 34 points. The Eagles defense came prepared, only allowing 49 rushing yards the whole game. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes got off to a bad start, especially in the second quarter when he threw two interceptions, one being a pick-6 by fan-favorite rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean. The Chiefs game didn’t pick up until the fourth quarter in the final minutes. Mahomes salvaged some drives and threw two touchdowns to receiver Xavier Worthy in the final minutes, but the Chief’s time had run short.
The Chiefs had the opportunity to set history, being the only team to win 3 championships in a row in the “Super Bowl Era”. The last time that happened was when the Green Bay Packers won the NFL Championship game in 1965, 66′, and 67′, before the game was even named the Super Bowl. When asked how this affected him, Wayne Hills senior Will Scura said, “It is devastating as a childhood Chiefs fan, but I know that this will just motivate Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs to come back and try to three-peat again.”
This year’s Apple Music Halftime Show was led by recent 5x 2024 Grammy winner Kendrick Lamar and his close friend and record label partner, SZA, who also won a Grammy at this year’s awards. Kendrick performed some of his most popular songs such as DNA and Humble, and also mixed in his newest hits, Not Like Us and Euphoria. SZA came out to help perform their joint songs, All The Stars and Luther. Special guests in the halftime show also included actor Samuel L. Jackson, Tennis legend Serena Williams, and rap producer Mustard.
After the game had ended, Jalen Hurts was awarded the Super Bowl MVP trophy, with a complete stat line of 221 passing yards with two touchdown passes, 72 rushing yards, and one rushing touchdown. Hurts only threw one interception.
Senior Peter Carr, a long-time Eagles fan, had this to say about the franchise’s future: “I would say the Eagles need to keep a lot of the starters on the team and not lose them to free agency and maintain the current coaching staff. The team is mostly young and has a great future.”
One thing that may have saddened Eagles fans a bit, was the missing stardom of Saquon Barkley, who had been one of the best running backs in the league for them this year. He ended with only 57 yards on 25 attempts. Although he may have not met the expectations the fans had for him in his first Super Bowl, he and the Eagles still got the work done and hoisted the Lombardi Trophy.
Now that the season is over, fans can look forward to the NFL Draft and an exciting free agency. The NFL will be back in August of 2025.
