The year 2024 is now coming to a rapid close, with its closure, we can now look back on all the music realized throughout this year, and who the students of Wayne Hills listen to most this year.
Sabrina’s Music Picks
To get a closer look at the music tastes of our sophomore journalists, Sabrina Linares has a taste that is very unique compared to other students. She spent over 30,000 minutes listening to artists and bands like Björk, Fiona Apple, Cocteau Twins, The Cranberries, and The Sundays. Out of these songwriters, Björk has been her personal favorite for 3 years. Her favorite songs are Björk’s “Play Dead”, Björk’s “Charlene”, Fiona Apple’s “The First Taste”, and Cocteau Twins “Bluebeard”. “I like to listen to music that sounds like my thoughts and feelings,” says the journalist.
Marconi’s Music Picks
Continuing onwards, our second journalist, Marconi, found himself enjoying some music artists as well. He found the music of Chappel Roan, Mitski, Green Day, Laufey, Lady Gaga, and the band Good Kid very enjoyable this year. He found that expanding his
music taste was very therapeutic to him. Some of his favorite songs from his artists are “Good Luck, Babe!” – Chappel Roan, “Nightlight’ – Laufey, “Ground” – Good Kid, “That’s Entertainment” – Cover by Lady Gaga, “Me and My Husband” – Mitski, and many more.
Chasie’s Music Pick
This year Chasie enjoyed the Japanese singer Ado who’s music career is taking off more and more. She has also enjoyed Maneskin, a rock band, but in particular, she enjoyed the album Rush released last year. She has also enjoyed her fair share of Vocaloid songs. Chasie has also enjoyed some less recently popular artists like Britney Spears, Lady GaGa, and Marina.
The Vocaloid song “Mesmerizer” in particular that came out in April of this year has grown a great popularity. The song features Utau Teto and the popular Vocaloid Hatsune Miku. The song was created by 32ki who usually doesn’t make music formatted the same way as “Mesmerizer”. The Creator of the song released “Obsolete Meat” which was formatted similarly to “Mesmerizer”. Although the lyrics talked about how he was happy about the take-off of
“Mesmerizer” but was worried that his other music may not be enjoyed anymore.
Top Albums
Moving on from our favorite music artists of this year, big albums were released from many popular artists, and one of the biggest albums released this year belongs to Charlie XCX and her Brat album. Songs such as “365”, “Apple”, “Mean Girls”, and even her collaboration song with Billie Eilish “Guess” became extremely popular this year.
Lady Gaga also makes a return, with the release of the second Joker movie, “Joker: Folie à Deux”, Lady Gaga released a very jazzy album to coincide with its release. Known as the “Harlequin” album, she made covers of old tunes such as “That’s Entertainment!”, “Oh, When the Saints”, “That’s Life”, and much more. She also included some original titles such as “The Joker” and “Folie à Deux”
Tyler the Creator dropped new songs with his album “Chromakopia”. Songs such as “Noid”, “Rah Tah Tah”, “St. Chroma”, and “Like Him”.
This is just a few, but so many more by talented artists were released. To name a few: “Beautifully Broken” – by Jelly Roll, “Shawn” – by Shawn Mendez, “GNX” – by Kendrick Lamar, “From Zero” – by Linkin Park, “143” – by Katy Perry, and “Missionary” – by Snoop Dogg. We’re sure many more artists will release more albums this coming year!
Rising Artist
2024 has given many new artists a chance to rise to popularity. Chappel Roan is one of these. Although snippets of her music have existed for many years, she is now just starting to gain a lot of popularity thanks to her album “The Rise and Fall of The Midwestern Princess,” released last year. One of her most popular songs that took off this year was “Hot To Go!” Although popular, she is facing some controversy due to her behavior around the paparazzi some find it inappropriate while others find it justified.
GloRilla is another popular artist gaining traction. Although first becoming first known in 2022, in 2024 she released collab songs with Megan Thee Stallion “Yeah Glo!” and
“Wanna Be” as well as featuring in the Chromakopia album with Tyler The Creator.
