Every year, the Wayne Hills Theater Workshop produces two shows. A play in the fall, and a musical in the spring. Right now, the cast is currently rehearsing the fall play: Our Miss Brooks!
The play is set in the 50s and follows the protagonist Miss Brooks, an overworked English teacher who dreams of vacation. Miss Brooks has some leisure this year as she doesn’t have to worry about directing the play. Except, when the principal dumps the responsibility of the play on her instead of leaving it with the band director, hijinks ensue. However, in the end, “everything got done. Everything got tended to”
The cast of the play includes senior Sophia Flower playing the title character, Miss Brooks. Senior Aiden Perez-Alcalde plays Miss Brooks love interest, Hugo the coach. Freshman Ryan Kleinknecht playing head basketball player, Ted Wilder. Senior Julianna Steir plays Ted’s secret admier, Jane Drew. These are just the lead roles, but many other dedicated students of Hills have come together to make this play happen!
We asked Mr. Fleissner, director of the school musical, how he is feeling about this upcoming play, “I am excited for the fall play, given who I know is involved—
since it is about an English teacher that makes it feel real to me so I’m very excited.”
Many students are reluctant About the play because it’s not well known, however, members of the cast insist that it’s a cute and fun show. Senior Juliana Steir says, “I love the play, I love comedies, and this is such a sweet play.”, and Senior Aiden Perez-Alcalde says, “I like it, and it’s pretty fun. The connections we have on stage are a lot of fun and I really enjoy my interactions with Brooks and Ted; I like those interactions a lot.
Sophomore Sophia Vargas says, “It’s pretty fun, I mean I don’t think it’s bad I didn’t know a thing about it before but it’s fun.”
“Our Miss Brooks” will be performed and produced by the Wayne Hills Theater Workshop on December 5th, 6th, and 7th. Show start time is 7:00 PM. Make sure to stop by and watch if you wanna have a laugh, support the students of Wayne Hills, or get extra credit. And if plays aren’t your thing, don’t worry! The spring musical this year will be “Chicago!” Audition dates for that show are to be determined.
