Democratic party representative Mikie Sherill, against her Republican party opponent Joseph Belnome, has won her seat again in District Eleven’s House of Representatives!
She managed to beat Belnome by 208,666 votes to 158,674 votes
Rebecca Michelle “Mikie” Sherill was born in Alexandria, Virginia, and graduated from South Lakes High School. She received a Bachelors in Science from the U.S. Naval Academy and served admirably for 10 years in the United States Navy.
After serving her country, Mikie Sherill moved towards her early political career, starting in the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis. In 2015, Sherill went on to become an assistant United States attorney for the District of New Jersey. In 2017, Sherill launched a full political campaign against her opponent Tamra Harris to be the sole representative of district eleven of New Jersey in the U.S. House of Representatives. This would lead her to serve her first term as District Eleven representative.
With great success also comes challenges. Sherill won’t be without her issues she needs to face in her fourth term. Sherill has promised to face growing issues such as gun violence, opioid and addiction crises, growing property taxes, and women’s rights.
As we watched on, the campaigns between Sherill and Belnome appeared to be calm and coordinated. As for any controversy during her campaign, none have sparked up.
Sophomore Gavin Ali gave his opinion, “I don’t know much about her, but she does seem like a good candidate.”
As we move forward from this election, many people believe Sherill will do a great job yet again representing District 11 of New Jersey.
