WHHS Ski Team Finishing Strong as the Season Winds Down
February 8, 2016
As the WHHS ski season winds down and the seniors take their last races as high school athletes there is still much to be accomplished. During the week the bus leaves Wayne Hills right after school and gets to Mountain Creek at around 3:15 where the team puts hours of hard work every day, and gets back to school at around 9:30. WHHS most recent race was, Monday, February 8, in which six schools including Wayne Hills attended and 50 racers competed. The schools consisted of Wayne Hills, Wayne Valley, Pope John, Delbarton, West Milford, Sparta, Pingree, and Vernon. Out of these 50 racers, senior racers Sarah Shawki and Amy Prol did exceptional, both placing in the top 25. Sarah Shawki with a composite time of 1 minute and 40 seconds placing 21st, and Amy Prol with a time of 1 minute and 20 seconds placing 8th, a job well done by the seniors leading the team. The scoring for these races is determined on individual performance placing out of the 50 racers, there is no team score in any of these races. With only two races left in the season there is much to look forward too, Senior Sarah Shawki shares her goals with us, “In the beginning of the season I went from placing just in the top 25 to placing 21st and now my goal is to place under 20, with all the hard work and long hours on the slopes I have no doubt I can achieve this, not only a milestone, also a memorable way to end the best four years with the best team doing what I love most.” With the confidence from one of Wayne’s best skiers it is certainly motivation to the rest of the team to finish out their races strong and to the best of their ability. The next race is tomorrow, February 9th, as the team gets ready, WHHS is supporting them and wishing them the best of luck in what has been a season for the books.
