Full Day Kindergarten: decision reached
February 9, 2016
Although many towns already have full day kindergarten instated, the Wayne community is the only town in the Passaic County district that does not currently offer full day kindergarten. The entire community is in complete uproar over the financial costs of an impending full day kindergarten. At first, the cost would be around $250 per student however, it is more likely that it will cost over $500 to fund one student to attend. The Board has yet to disclose how the program will be funded, however, there is speculation that the funds would be pulled from high school athletics. High school students and faculty were infuriated after hearing this, and went to the meeting to fight it and explain why taking money out of athletic funds is a bad for the town. “Athletics are a huge part of the high school experience,” said senior Christina Vittas who spoke at and attended the assembly. The $2.1 million proposal had initially gained support among younger families but was opposed by older residents who did not want their taxes raised. The vote was 4,455 for, 5,048 against according to tallies supplied by the township. However, despite being voted against, the township board members decided that they were going to push for the proposal to be passed anyway The Board of Education recently overturned the decision and voted 6-2 in favor of full day kindergarten; the program will commence in the 2016-2017 school year. Because it is unclear as to where the money to fund the program will be taken from, there is still much to discuss. Many Wayne athletes are still hopeful that these cuts won’t affect such an important part of their lives.
“Athletics prevent many students from making poor choices,” said senior Karl Reidel “ I just hope that whatever outcome is reached, students remain just as spirited and involved in our school community.”
