The Mystery Behind Singapore: Smartest Kids in the World
February 4, 2016
Singapore has been scientifically proven to be the country with the highest amount of intelligent students, as of 2016. Kids in Singapore grow up learning at a very young age– before they even get to primary school. Education seems to be especially valued in Asian countries. Because of Singapore’s academic success, it has lead to the country being one of the best performing economies in the entire world.
Preschool is one of the most important years in a child’s life because it is the base of the rest of their education. Diana Ong, principal at Pat’s Schoolhouse Sembawang Country Club said, “I think the first years of a child’s life is very important. So when you have a very confident child, that child’s confidence will carry him or her through primary school as well. Not only do you want a child that is smart, you want a child who is resilient.”
Another factor that has a great impact on the education of kids in Singapore is money. A lot of money is spent by parents and grandparents to get quality education for the children. The mentality of the people living in Singapore is that education comes first, and that people are willing to spend as much money they can to ensure that their child gets a well rounded education.
On the other hand, I took a look at the kids in schools in America, more specifically a WHHS student. “The reason why America isn’t number one academically is because education is not everyone’s main priority,” said Sammy Samkough. “Some kids slack off and don’t take school seriously and others just want the education to make money in the future. They don’t want to get education to gain knowledge. Some kids even drop out.”
In fact, statistics show that the dropout rate of children in America is about 10 percent while Singapore is only 1.6 percent.

Education may be essential for economic and technological progresses, but it shouldn’t be considered as the number one priority. Maybe not Singapore specifically, but many other Asians countries like South Korea. India, and Japan have high suicide rates because of the pressure that comes with education. Although America isn’t top in academics and has a dropout rate of 10%, it is one of the most advanced country in the world; therefore, is education really as important as people make it out to be? Personally, I think happiness comes before education because the end goal of being educated is for a career that can support you for life in comfort and happiness. People are born to enjoy life, not to kill themselves over education and parents should spend their money on their children’s happiness, not on education. Well, not until high school, when the actually need it.
