Novak Djokovic Captures Sixth Australian Open Title
February 11, 2016
The Australian Open Final had two familiar foes going against each other. Ten-time Grand Slam champion and current number 1 ranked Novak Djokovic faced two-time major champion and currently ranked number 2 Andy Murray. This was not the first time they played. In fact, this was the 31st match Murray versed Djokovic, which had Djokovic being the favorite from day one. Djokovic led the head to head 21-9 and has dominated the rivalry. Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in the semifinals in four sets and won his seventh Australian Open title.
On the other side, Andy Murray defeated 13th ranked Milos Raonic in five sets after losing two of the first three. He then came up short once again against Djokovic. Djokovic captured his sixth Australian Open Title and 11th overall Grand Slam Major last Sunday against Murray. Djokovic won in straight sets 6-1, 7-5, and 7-6. WHHS Freshman
Galo Guerra thought that Djokovic had the major upper-hand from the beginning. “They should just give Djokovic the trophy because he’s won four out of the last six and he doesn’t really have a challenge against Andy Murray.” The next Grand Slam is in May where Novak Djokovic has not won before. He will look to snap that streak in May while Murray will look for vengeance.
