Drug Lord El Chapo Captured By Mexican Government

Infamous drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel has been captured once again. The Mexican government released a tape of the Navy’s raid on his hideout in Sinaloa, Mexico on Monday, January 11. The video shows the intense battle that took place on Friday, January 8 between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Mexican Navy, including grenades and a firefight. At the end of the operation, Guzman and six of his men are in custody and another five henchmen lay dead along the floorboard. Miraculously, only one Mexican marine was injured and he is expected to live past his injury.

Throughout all of the struggle though, Guzman almost escaped through a secret passageway leading towards the underground sewers below his hideout. It took at least ninety minutes for Mexican authorities to find the secret tunnel, according to a senior Mexican law enforcement. Soldiers chased Guzman down until he ultimately left the sewers, stealing a car with one of his henchmen who followed Guzman. He was officially caught when authorities saw him speeding down a highway leaving the city. The capture marked his sixth month and third day since he tunneled his way out of a maximum security prison.

When authorities searched his home, they found a massive collection of weapons including loaded rocket launchers, eight rifles, semi-automatic weapons, grenades, and four armored vehicles. “He was a major threat to innocent people so it’s a relief that they finally caught him again. They might want to have more surveillance on him this time though.” said Freshmen Jack Palatucci. Guzman has since been returned to the same Mexican prison from which he escaped, but Mexican officials plan to extradite him to the United States where he faces drug trafficking charges related to his cartel.
