Super Bowl Sunday: a “holiday” full of bets, appetizers, halftime shows… and of course the best day for television commercials.

This year’s super bowl, LVI, was broadcasted by NBC, which says some advertisers have paid up to $7 million for just a 30-second ad during the game. In previous years, the average cost for an ad had been about $5.6 million, but this year the average was $6.5 million… a big jump.

Most ads use concepts like comedy, nostalgia, celebrity appearances, and special effects.

Senior Carly Collins recalls a cool special effects commercial for CoinBase. “There was a QR code changing colors just floating on the black screen, so I scanned it with my phone and it took my right to a place where I could invest in the currency. It was a cool concept,” says Collins.

On the other hand, celebrities had appearances in several top commercials. Kevin Hart played a role in an ad for Sam’s Club, Lindsay Lohan for Planet Fitness, and superstar actress Scarlett Johansson and Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost’s played a couple role in an ad for Amazon Alexa

Junior Lilly Weltman says her favorite commercial every year has been the Pringles one. “They always do a good job incorporating comedy. This year it had a ‘Twilight Zone’ feel to it. The guy leaves a Pringles can on his right hand through dating, marriage, the birth of his child, and death,” WELTMAN SAID.

A heart-felt commercial this year included Lizzo and her new song, “If you love me, you love all of me / Or none of me at all.” The ad was for Google’s real tone software. It emphasized the idea that African Americans have long struggled with cameras and photography technology made to work better with white faces, making it difficult to capture darker skin. The ad was extremely touching and definitely stood apart from the others.

Now advertisers and fans will have to wait one whole year for the next Super Bowl to see television ads as good as these.
