The San Bernardino Shootings

New details are quickly emerging regarding the shooting in San Bernardino, California that left 14 dead on Wednesday, December 2nd. The shooters, who were killed in a shoot-out with the police on the day of the shooting, have been identified as Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik.  Both have been linked to terror cells in the Los Angeles area, officials have reported.

Due to the staggering amount of planning that went into the attack, the FBI announced in the days immediately following the shooting that it has decided to treat it as terrorism for the time being.  Although many have made assumptions that this attack is related to ISIS, it appears as though Farook and Malik had no communication with the radical group. The FBI is considering it an act of “self-radicalization,” meaning that although it could have been inspired by a terrorist group, it was initiated by the individuals.

Farook and Malik’s relatives have spoken out and expressed their shock regarding the events. They claimed to be unaware of their relatives’ radical nature and are currently fighting to gain custody of the shooters’ daughter who was orphaned by the events.

Speculation has risen that a possible cause of the shooting could be religious disputes in Farook’s workplace.  However, this raises the controversy of why Farook and his wife were in possession of such significant weapons.  Found in Farook and Malik’s home following the shooting were pipe bombs along with a staggering amount of weaponry and ammunition.

Although ISIS has not claimed responsibility for the attack, they praise the shooters.  Malik made verbal and online claims of allegiance to ISIS, although she was apparently not an “official” member.
