3-Year-Old Rescued 4 Days After an Earthquake from Rubble

Ayda Gezgin, known as “our miracle” by Turkish officials, is a little girl who was trapped under debris for 91 hours after a 7.0 magnitude Earthquake last Friday.
She was saved by Turkish rescue crews on Tuesday after the earthquake hit the large city of Izmir. She is reported to be 3 years old, making it a miracle that she was able to survive under such harsh conditions.
As the rescue crews were trying to find any survivors from the earthquake, a worker heard the cries of a girl in the distance. He walked over and started to gently remove the layers of debris until he found Gezgin.
After she was rescued, she asked the medic for ayran, a yogurt drink that is popular in the country. She also ateĀ Turkish meatballs. Workers and people applauded for her and cheered, exclaiming “God is great!”
After she recovered, it is reported by the Interior Ministry that she replied to everyone’s concerns with two simple words: “I’m fine.”
“I’m really happy that she was saved!” exclaimed Irene Hwang, a hills sophomore. “Considering how young she is and how much more of her life she has to live out, she’s really lucky.”
This strong girl has become the 107th person on the list of others who have been rescued from the earthquake’s rubble. Her father and brother were luckily alive and well because they were not inside their apartment during the earthquake. Unfortunately, her mother did not survive and was found a few hours later under some rubble as well.
Experts say that Ayda is very fortunate, for many buildings in Turkey are poorly crafted, and illegally evade safety regulations. Though regulations are becoming more strict, and authorities are attempting to make some progress, experts speculate that the minor changes are not enough.
“The government should be more strict when new buildings are being built,” Hwang commented critically. “There are endless reasons why they should care about the safety of the citizens. The government is in charge of ensuring the safety of its citizens. The results of the carelessness of the government are catastrophic; the children get hurt, and people lose lives.”
