Happy Holidays Wayne Hills
November 25, 2015
The holidays are right around the corner and it’s just about impossible not to be excited! Students are simply erupting with holiday cheer no matter what they celebrate, and WHHS loves to take part in the celebration with winter concerts, Gatsby parties and candy canes. But it’s still autumn, and we can’t forget about Thanksgiving! Students all over the school are excited for Thanksgiving break. Whether they are going away, or staying home, they look forward to sharing a meal with their families. Some students even have relatives from other countries visting.
`The Winter concert is just one way that WHHS celebrates the holiday season. The choir and band performs an arrangement of winter and holiday songs in a concert after school in the auditorium. The band and choir rehearse for months to perfect their music to get you into a holiday mood. Afterwards, there are snacks and refreshments in the commons. It’s a nice show to share with your friends and family and definitely worth checking out.
Candy cane grams is a fundraiser done by the choir around the holiday season to raise money for trips and equipment. You can buy a candy cane with a note attached to it where you can personalize your message. It will be delivered to them in their homeroom class the day before winter break. They are sweet little gifts you can have sent to your friends and teachers that will be sure to make them smile.
Gatsby parties are thrown by 10th grade English teachers the day before winter break. Like the parties in the famous novel The Great Gatsby, students dress up in “flapper style” and learn about the 1920s while enjoying snacks with their classmates. “Gatsby parties are our way of educating students about the styles, trends, and overall zaniness of the 1920s,” says english teacher Donna Del Moro. This is a tradition that began nearly a decade ago and hopefully will last for another 10 years.
Of course, winter break is what everyone looks forward to around the holidays. A week off from school to enjoy time with your family and friends is just what everyone needs. From December 24th to January 4th, we are out of school for Christmas eve, Christmas day, New Year’s eve and New Year’s day. Whether you celebrate each of these holidays or not, you can still enjoy having time off to relax and catch with family and friends before you have to drag yourself back into school.
