The 77th Golden Globe Awards, an award show that recognizes the year’s best films, televisions shows, actors, directors, and writers, was held on January 5th at the Beverly Hilton in LA.
Directed by Sam Mendes, who won the Golden Globe for Best Director, 1917 won the award for Best Motion Picture (Drama). Once Upon a Time in Hollywood won Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy).
Joaquin Phoenix won the award for Best Actor in a Drama for his performance in Joker, which also won the award for Best Original Score. Renée Zellweger won Best Actress for her role in Judy. For musicals and comedies, Awkwafina won Best Actress and Taron Egerton won Best Actor.
“[Joaquin Phoenix] deserved [Best Actor] because I feel like it’s really hard to get into that kind of character who has severe mental issues,” said senior Stella Park when asked about Phoenix and Joker. “He conveys the joker so well and it makes viewers sympathize with him but also be scared of him at the same time.”
The winners for Best Supporting Actor/Actress in a Motion Picture were Laura Dern (Marriage Story) and Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).
Television shows were honored as well, with Succession winning Best TV Series (Drama) and Fleabag winning Best TV Series (Musical/Comedy).
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association awarded honorary Golden Globes to Ellen Degeneres and Tom Hanks. Degeneres received the Carol Burnett Award for “outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen,” and Hanks received the Cecil B. deMille Award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.”
The 92nd Academy Awards nominations were announced on January 13, and a list of all nominations can be found here.
