2019 Oscar Nominations Are Here

Nominations for the 91st Annual Academy Awards airing on February 24th were released last week, and many popular and recent films are in the running to win awards.

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, recognize the most successful films of the year. Awards include Best Picture, Lead Actor/Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress, and Director.

With ten nominations each, including Best Picture, Roma and The Favourite led the nominations. The other films that were nominated for Best Picture are Black PantherBlacKkKlansmanBohemian RhapsodyGreen BookA Star Is Born, and Vice.

Nominees for Lead Actor are Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, William Dafoe, Rami Malek, and Viggo Mortensen. For Lead Actress, nominees are Yalitza Aparicio, Glenn Close, Olivia Colman, Melissa McCarthy, and Lady Gaga, who earned her first acting nomination as well as a nomination for Best Original Song.

“I think a new side of [Lady Gaga] was revealed and people’s thoughts on her have changed since she played this role,” said freshman Jiwon Song. “After listening to the song and watching [A Star is Born], I appreciate her a lot more.”

Kevin Hart was set to be the host for the award ceremony, but after controversy in December regarding homophobic tweets that were uncovered, Hart will no longer be the host. Hart’s replacement, if any, is unknown.

The Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and will air on ABC at 8 P.M. ET.
