Boomer Sooner! Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray wins the 2018 Heisman Trophy
December 10, 2018
College Football’s most prestigious award “The Heisman Trophy” was awarded Saturday December 8th in New York City.
The three finalists were all quarterbacks. Tua Tagovailoa from the University of Alabama, Kyler Murray from Oklahoma University, and The Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins. Tua seemed to be the favorite going into Saturday night’s ceremony, but Murray came out on top.
Kyler Murray, who is a professional baseball player in the Oakland Athletics farm system, had won the Heisman Trophy with a total of 517 first place votes. Tagovailoa, second with 299 first place votes and Haskins finished third with 46 first place votes.
Murray lead the Sooners throwing 4.053 yards and 40 touchdowns as they won the Big 12 and secured a spot in the College Football Playoff where they will face Alabama in the first round.
This is the second straight year an Oklahoma QB had brought the Heisman Trophy back to the Sooner State. Kyler Murray had transferred from Texas A&M to Oklahoma where he redshirted and sat behind the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner and eventual first over pick in the NFL draft Baker Mayfield.
Although Murray had a remarkable year, many people believe that the other two finalists were snubbed of the award. Louis D’Agati, a senior at Wayne Hills, mentioned that his beloved Buckeyes quarterback Dwayne HAskins deserved the trophy. He stated, “No, Kyler Murray did not deserve the Heisman”, and further stated that most of the success of both Mayfield and Murray the previous two seasons falls on the shoulders of the Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley.
