The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) club performed an exercise throughout the school day on Friday, November 2nd to spread awareness of the frequency of drug and alcohol-related incidents.

Every fifteen minutes, a student at WHHS  left class and went to the CST suite to get their faces painted white to symbolize a corpse. Each student also wore a tag describing how they died. For the remainder of the day, these students were asked to remain silent in classes to honor the dead and were considered a ghost of themselves.

“I think the [activity] is really important because it advocates for the dangers of doing drugs and how it could possibly kill you,” said Nedeen Khashashina, a junior who participant in the activity.

Although the death rate is no longer 15 minutes and has thankfully decreased to 56.5 minutes, a visual representation of a student suddenly dying every 15 minutes due to the possible results of drugs and alcohol is imperative to display to high school students.

“I believe it’s a powerful way to draw attention to these problems,” commented junior Kyla Gallipoli, who also took part in the exercise. “It makes people stop and think about the consequences of drugs and alcohol.”

At the end of the day, the ‘victims’ gathered at the main entrance of the school as a powerful image of the large impact drugs and alcohol can make in just seven hours.
