Predicting the 2019 NFL Awards
May 20, 2018
With a new rookie class coming in, veterans returning from injury, players and coaches in new cities, the 2018 NFL season looks to be filled with excitement.
Coach of the Year- Kyle ShanahanÂ
- With the acquisition of Jimmy Garoppolo from the Patriots before the trade deadline last season, the improvement on defense, the signing of Jerrick McKinnon, and drafting Mike McGlinchey the 49ers can have a season like 2013. After acquiring Garoppolo last season the 49ers went undefeated when he started the games under center. Garoppolo fits perfectly with Shanahan’s offense and after what we saw last year Shanahan and the Niners can make a run for it
Offensive Rookie of the Year- Saquon Barkley RB GIants
- Going into the draft, Saquon Barkley was the clear #1 Overall Prospect, and i don’t think his stats will say anything less. With the lack of a running game that the Giants have had for so long, Barkley will add a new dimension to their offense. The distractions of Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard, and Evan Ingram, Barkley can help the Giants move the ball downfield as the wide receivers and tight end will likelt be covered tightly.
Defensive Rookie of the Year- Bradley Chubb DE Broncos
- At the fifth pick in the draft, the Broncos took the best available player in Bradley Chubb. Chubb is an extremely explosive athlete, with speed, strength, and finesse. With Von Miller rushing off the edge on the other side of the line, Chubb can have many opportunities to take advantage of. Although he will be rushing against the quarterback’s best friend, the Left Tackle, Chubb can have a field day in his rookie season.
MVP- Carson Wentz QB Eagles
- After having a MVP-esque season last year for the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles, Wentz is looking to bounce back from a torn ACL suffered in week 15 against the Rams. After tearing his ACL Wentz stayed in the game for four plays, eventually throwing a touchdown to Alshon Jeffery. At the time of the injury Wentz led the NFL with 32 touchdowns. With most of the Eagles offense coming back for this coming season, and the addition of Dallas Goedert, Wentz’ passing game looks to improve, which could get him the MVP Trophy.
Offensive Player of the Year- DeShaun Watson QB Texans
- After only playing in six full games last season due to a torn ACL, Watson posted a 103.0 QBR for the Texans. Watson put on a show in those six games throwing for 1,699 yards and 19 touchdowns. With wide receivers DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, Bruce Ellington returning, and the addition of Sammy Coates and Keke Coutee, the Houston offense can be explosive again this coming season.
Defensive Player of the Year- Khalil Mack OLB Raiders
- With Jon Gruden now at the helm for the Raiders, he brings an old school defense back to Oakland. Khalil Mack won the award this past season with 10.5 sacks and 61 total tackles. Although Mack plays outside linebacker he is an edge rusher who plays more like a defensive end. With the Oakland defense likely to improve after finishing with the 23rd worst defense in the NFL last season, Khalil Mack will play a big part in dictating their games.
