The Heir by Kiera Cass Book Review

By Hannah Lee, Assistant Senior Editor

Author, Kiera Cass released another book of the Selection series, The Heir. This book takes place 20 years after the marriage of America Singer and Maxon Schreave. Now as king and queen, they help prepare their daughter, Eadlyn Schreave, to be the next queen. However, people are rebelling against the authority. To suppress the people’s anger, the royal family plan what they call a selection.

The first three books of the Selection series was predictable and emotional. The Heir was expected to give people the same effect or more. However, many were disappointed at first. This is because Eadlyn Schreave comes off as snobby, independent, spoiled princess. America, Eadlyn’s mother, was just as independent, but always though of others equal or more than her. It’s surprising to know someone who was raised by such great people could turn out so rotten. This made readers dislike the book.

As the selection continued, a character growth occurs. Eadlyn discovers that all this time, she has been selfish and did  not pay attention to other like a queen would. To become queen, she should always think about her people. She also didn’t think she would fall in love with any man in the Selection. She actually wanted to drive them away. However, many men, especially one who had disliked fervorously, had captured her heart.

This allowed people to start to like Eadlyn, along with the people of the country. The readers definitely ended up loving the book.

“It’s definitely a book that you may hate in the beginning, but end up loving. It’s a very dramatic series, but you want to read it more. It’s about more than just the selection. It has to do with war and the ruling of a country. You see up close, what really goes on behind the glamorous life of being a Princess.”, explained Sophia Jeon, junior.

Cass will be coming up with the next book of the series, which will be the final book. It will be called The Crown. It’s planned to be released May 3, 2016. Does this mean that Eadlyn will become queen sooner than everyone thinks? Does this mean something bad will happen to America and Maxon? Stay tuned to find out!
