Star Wars Feature
October 28, 2015
After months of anticipation, the release date for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now only two months away and fans can’t wait to see what’s in store for the new series. Directed by J.J. Abrams, The Force Awakens is set to be the first installment in a series of new Star Wars movies, including three separate spin-off movies not part of the “numbered” series.
Disney has so far released two teasers and one official trailer, offering answers to details that fans have wondered about, but prompting even more questions as new elements of the movie are revealed. Some of the most notable aspects of the new movie include the apparent absence of Luke Skywalker, the new antagonist, Kylo Ren, and a new droid to accompany the main heroes, BB-8. However, the most important addition is the focus on a new protagonist: Finn, a Stormtrooper who has escaped the Dark Side and now fights along Han Solo and Chewbacca.
Episode VII has already brought in millions of dollars through merchandising, when official merchandise released on September 4th, dubbed “Force Friday”. Predictions so far have Episode VII easily crossing $1 billion at the box office, and possibly surpassing the box office record set by Avatar of $2.7 billion. Undoubtedly, it will break numerous box office records, with pre-sold IMAX tickets tallying a staggering $6.5 million, eight times the previous record holder set by the first Hunger Games movie.
Overall, fans are very excited and have few complaints from what they’ve seen so far. Quinn He, a junior at WHHS, said “I’ve been a Star Wars fan as long as I can remember, I was in awe when I saw the trailer and I can’t wait for it to come out.” With the long-awaited video game, Star Wars: Battlefront, preceding the movie’s release by a month, Star Wars is set to see its biggest revival ever this coming winter.
